Medical Laboratory Scientist - Laboratory
Nature of the Position
As a member of a laboratory professional team, the technologist will work within the goals and objectives established by the departmental management team in harmony with the guidelines and policies of the laboratory and hospital to provide accurate, timely, cost effective, and efficient testing of patient specimen samples. The Medical Laboratory Scientist will demonstrate a knowledge of clinical laboratory testing procedures and conduct testing in accordance with the standards of accrediting agencies, ethical practices of the laboratory and hospital, and prudent practices of safety and infection control.

Work Schedule: 5:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Monday - Friday
7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Monday - Friday
10:00 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. Monday - Friday
3:30 p.m. - 12:00 a.m. Monday - Friday
6:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Weekends
3:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. Weekends
Rotate on call and weekends
Knowledge, Experience, or Skills
1. Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent related field of science with clinical laboratory experience and ASCP certification (or equivalent)or;
2. An Associate’s Degree in Medical Technology with two to three years of clinical laboratory experience and ASCP certification (or equivalent)or;
3. HEW or HHS certification as technologist
4. Successfully completed an official U.S. Military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician) prior to April 24, 1995, or;
5. Have completed at least 60 semester hours or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, include:
A. 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses or
B. 24 semester hours of science courses that include:
(1.) Six semester hours of chemistry and
(2.) Six semester hours of biology and
(3.) Twelve semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination and
C. Meet one of the following:
(1.) At least three months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing or
(2.) Have previously qualified or could have qualified as a technologist under Sec. 493.1491 on or before February 28, 1991
Qualifications:
• Knowledgeable of the laboratory policy and procedures for processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results
• Knowledgeable of laboratory quality control policies.
• Knowledgeable about state and federal regulations of laboratory
• Supports and enforces infection control policies and procedures
• Maintain discretion and confidentiality in communications
• Knowledgeable about policies and procedures regarding reporting and release of Protected Health Information (PHI)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Follow the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient results.
• Maintain records that demonstrate proficiency-testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
• Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies and documenting all QC activities, instrument, and procedural calibrations, and instrument maintenance
• Follow the laboratory’s policies whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.
• Be able to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problem or notify the supervisor
• Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
• Participate in various committees, meetings, in-service training as required.
• Participate actively in quality improvement programs
• Perform preventive maintenance checks and report any problems to the supervisor
• Participates as an active member of the hospital and departmental team to support special projects and activities.
• Accurately and promptly implement provider’s orders
• Input patient orders from requisitions received.
• Procures, stores and routes supplies
• Assist and perform all necessary laboratory tests.
• Perform laboratory results on patients in a timely and professional manner.
• Maintain acceptable standards of patient treatment.
• Maintains a professional approach with confidential hospital and patient information and ensures safe patient environment
• Follows laboratory policies and guideline regarding waste management
• Keeps work area clean and orderly
• Maintain certifications and continuing education requirement needed to perform the job
• Miscellaneous duties as assigned, requested or required.
Language/ Reading Skills:
• Communicate verbally and in writing in English, some Spanish is preferred
• Legible hand writing is required
• Read and interpret technical instruction proficiently
Mathematical Skills:
• Basic statistic concepts and a basic knowledge in fundamentals of physiology, chemistry and biology
Reasoning Ability:
• Respond to commonly occurring problems/situations for which standards, procedures, and precedents exist.
Work Environment:
• Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, ascend and descend stairs, posses ability to handle, hold or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms
• Must be able to lift 25 pounds from the floor to waist and may occasionally be required to lift 50 pounds from the floor to waist level. Specific vision abilities include close vision and the ability to clearly focus with normal color vision.
Pay: $28.00 - $37.48 Commensurate with experience and education
